Allensworth History

In August, 1908 Colonel Alan Allensworth, a former slave, and four other settlers established a town founded, financed and governed by African Americans. Their dream of developing an abundant and thriving community stemmed directly from a strong belief in programs that allowed blacks to help themselves create better lives. By 1910, Allensworth’s success was the focus of many national newspaper articles. The eventual demise of this small community. Lack of water, isolation from major trade routes and nearby employment, made it difficult for the residents of this tiny town. Another blow to the community was the untimely death of Colonel Allensworth, who was injured while on a business trip.

The Investigation
PGS was given permission to investigate Allensworth for possible paranormal activity from the State Parks. This was the first time a ghost hunting group had been allowed to do this. Joined by a State Park Ranger, KMPH Channel 26 News Crew and the Porterville Recorder, members went out and started investigating.

Experiences included strange sounds within the various homes, a feeling of being watched and shadows. While investigating Allensworth, the group recorded voices, cookware and furniture being moved and the ringing of a long gone telephone. Group members also heard footsteps following them on a gravel roadway, the sound of small feet running by the school yard, knocking and the sensation of being watched.
EVPS, Listen Carefully
Please Note:
While listening to the following sounds, please turn up your speakers or wear headphones to listen more closely. Spirits do not speak very loudly….in fact; it takes an experienced ear to catch them….

"Mechanical Voice "
| This one was recorded at the Smith House. We didn’t hear it until the entire 4 hours of audio was reviewed. The recorder was left at the beginning of the investigation and no one entered the building until the recorder was removed at the end of the investigation. It’s an odd sounding mechanical voice. |

Knock And Then Hollow Movement Sounds
| After some attempts at looking for what might cause this sound, an old tin baking pan was accidentally touched as it laid on top of the stove. When it moved and rolled, this is the sound it made. The Smith House was locked, unoccupied and the alarm was set by the Park Ranger. |

Phone Ringing
| Another Smith House sound…this is either a 30’s-40’s era phone or alarm clock. When an alarm clock from that era was activated by the Park Ranger, the ringing was very similar. |
